Summary

The post holder will be competent and knowledgeable in the application of a wide range of clinical activities. To work as part of a team to deliver high quality care and clinical services to adults within Intensive Care. To seek clarification from senior nursing staff whenever the post holder is uncertain about their duties or responsibilities. To mentor staff (if applicable) to support them to further enhance and acquire new knowledge and skills sets. To assist in service and good practice developments. To work in partnership patients and their families, demonstrating sensitivity by promoting comfort, dignity, privacy and quality of life. To always ensure that the patients best interests are paramount. To lead by example maintaining high standards of practice and being clear about reporting mechanisms within the department. To work in a co-operative and collaborative manner communicating effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team across the floor. To work under the direct and indirect supervision of a qualified nurse or doctor. To work effectively as a member of the team, offering support to colleagues and requesting assistance as necessary. To work as part of a multidisciplinary team in providing high quality direct and indirect patient care, demonstrating considerable responsibility and autonomy, providing guidance for junior staff within the team. To provide patient appropriate information and reassurance to patients and their families or friends. To maintain accurate, clear and concise patient records when applicable. To promptly report any concerns about the care and/or safety of any child in the department to the nurse in charge. To actively participate and contribute to departmental discussions and team meetings. To be able to locate and adhere to all policies relating to good working practices within the clinical area. To ensure that appropriate information is available for use by patients and their families. At the direction of the registered nurse and within your scope of practice participate fully in the delivery of planned clinical care within the acute care setting. To successfully complete the National Competency Framework for Health Care Support Workers in Adult Critical Care Supportive Level Proficiencies and in line with local competency assessments. To work in partnership with patients and their families to negotiate care. To provide personal care to patients as appropriate with care and compassion. To support and accompany nursing/medical staff with patients to other clinical/diagnostic areas in the hospital as necessary. To perform safe clinical procedures which have been identified as part of the role and for which competency has been assessed i.e. blood glucose and arterial gas testing, ECG and documenting and reporting the results accordingly. These competencies will be locally agreed and assessed. To be aware of your competencies and acknowledge your own limitations/boundaries asking for assistance as required. To recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations. To maintain and follow strict infection prevention and control practices as per trust policies and procedures. To always work to provide a positive patient experience. To ensure efficient use of resources to deliver high quality care. To assist in the education and orientation of new and temporary staff members to the unit. To provide advice and demonstrate own activities and workplace routines to new or less experienced employees within the unit. To promote, monitor and maintain a healthy, safe and secure environment for patients, families and staff. To maintain a safe working environment, reporting incidents, accidents, complaints according to Trust policy. To organise own day-to-day work tasks and activities, considering the needs of the patients and the clinical staff engaged in their care. To maintain equipment in a clean, safe, satisfactory condition and report immediately any malfunction. To maintain minimum stock levels and follow local procedures for ordering and checking delivery of clinical and non-clinical supplies for the department. To assist in maintaining a clean and well organised environment by keeping the department clean, stocked up, tidy and uncluttered, ensuring that equipment and stores are put in the correct place. To ensure own compliance regarding mandatory/statutory training and personal development. To undertake personal development to meet identified needs.
