Job Role

A lovely couple with a good sense of humour, based close to Humberstone Golf Course, LE5 0TB, are looking to recruit a PA (or 2 PAs) to support them both.

Hours: 14.5 hours per week split between the couple

Pay: £15.50 per hour, increasing to £16:00 upon completion of a successful probation period

Duties

The gentleman is a wheelchair user who has partial paralysis and the lady experiences seizures and fatigue. Support will be needed every morning from 7:00am until 8:30am to help them both get ready for the day, and both like to remain as independent as possible.

The husband requires help cleaning hard to reach places such as his feet and back, help with dressing himself, and medication prompts. His speech may be slightly delayed so patience and good spoken English are essential.

The wife will also need help with self-care tasks and getting ready for the day, as well as helping to maintain and manage the home environment.

She also has an additional four hours to be used during the week for community activities outside of the home – days and times to be agreed between the PA and the employer. It is therefore necessary that the PA is over 25 (for insurance purposes), has a manual driving licence and is a confident driver, as they will need to drive the couples’ specially adapted wheelchair accessible van.

Due to the nature of daily visits the couple are prepared to employ two PAs on reduced hours should applicants wish to split the morning visits by weekdays and weekends.

Qualifications and Qualities

Have a driving licence, aged over 25 (for insurance reasons) and confident driving their wheelchair adapted vehicle
Previous care support is preferred
A patient and supportive outlook
Local, reliable, and trustworthy
Good spoken English
Able to meet physical requirements for domestic tasks
The PA's attitude

Understand that the preservation of dignity & independence is important
Respect the possessions & equipment in the employer’s home
Any questions regarding tasks should be clarified before starting
It is important that the PA is respectful of the employer's independence, provide assistance at the right time, enabling the employer to lead an independent/individual lifestyle in their own home within the community.

The PA should understand their role to assist with the self-defined needs of their disabled employer, and feel confident to ask what these needs are, and listen to requests and follow directions given.

Learning the Job

Daily tasks will be learnt and familiarised through PA & employer working together. There are Moving & Handling courses that can be arranged. If PAs do not have formal training certificates, training courses are available.
