Summary

Are you looking to help interpret the Science Museum Group's collections through fresh and high-quality spatial exhibition and design?

About us

The Science Museum's Design Studio includes both graphic and spatial designers. We design for temporary exhibitions, permanent galleries and other museum spaces such as the Space Gallery and theEngineers Gallery. We also design wayfinding and signage, marketing campaigns, print and publications for the Museum. Together with our Communications colleagues, we are the Brand Guardians.

We are responsible for establishing and maintaining the highest level of design standards and we are involved in most activities and projects across the Museum. We enjoy inspiring collaborations with our inhouse colleagues and external designers.

We are now looking for a Senior Exhibition & Spatial Designer to join us on a permanent, full-time basis at the Science Museum.

About the role

As a Senior Exhibition & Spatial Designer, you will play a key role in interpreting our collections and stories through fresh, sophisticated, and high‑quality spatial and exhibition design. Your work will span a wide range of project types, including furniture and product design, interior and exhibition design, architectural feasibility studies, and 3D visualisations. You will also be responsible for producing designs from concept through to detailed stages, including design reports, tender documentation, production information, and specifications.

Reporting to the Senior Spatial & Exhibition Design Manager and working closely with our in‑house design team, you will contribute to raising design standards across the organisation. While your primary focus will be the Science Museum, the Science & Industry Museum, and the National Museum of Science & Media, you may also support design projects across the wider Science Museum Group. This role operates under a hybrid working model, with a minimum of two days per week onsite.

About you

We welcome applications from candidates with demonstrable experience delivering exhibition design across RIBA Stages 0-6, including the technical coordination of work packages and the preparation of specifications. You will hold a degree-level qualification (or possess equivalent experience) in Architecture, Exhibition Design, or a related discipline level qualification.

You will bring a solid understanding of the wider design considerations within a museum context, including graphic design, lighting, conservation‑safe approaches, accessible design, and showcase design. We're looking for someone with a genuine passion for design and a clear sense of ownership over the quality of the visitor experience across the Science Museum Group. Effective teamwork is essential, along with the ability to empower, support, and collaborate with colleagues at all levels of the organisation.

Don't feel you meet all the criteria? We welcome you to apply even if your experience doesn't match directly. With your transferable skills, you could be the right candidate for this, or other opportunities that we have.
