The Role of the EAL Teaching Assistant

The school is seeking an exceptional and dedicated EAL (English as an Additional Language) Teaching Assistant to join a vibrant and diverse secondary school environment within the city of Leeds. This is an essential part-time position, spanning three days a week, with the successful candidate starting in January. The role focuses on providing specialist support to students who are new to English or require additional assistance to access the full curriculum.

Requirements

  • Previous experience working with EAL students in a school setting.
  • Knowledge of the National Curriculum and its application to EAL learners.
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.
  • Enhanced Child DBS on the updated service (Willingness to apply for one)

  • Proficiency in supporting the development of literacy and comprehension skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build rapport with students and staff.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of different language acquisition methodologies.
  • High level of adaptability and flexibility.
Key Responsibilities
  • Delivering focused one-to-one and small group interventions to develop English language proficiency.
  • Assisting classroom teachers in differentiating materials to make lessons accessible for EAL students.
  • Supporting students' cultural and linguistic transition into the school environment.
  • Creating and adapting engaging learning resources tailored to EAL learners' needs.
  • Monitoring and recording student progress in English language acquisition.
  • Promoting the inclusion and integration of EAL students into the wider school community.
  • Communicating effectively with parents/guardians regarding student development.
  • Assisting with assessment and tracking of EAL student attainment.
  • Providing in-class support across various subjects as required.
  • Participating in relevant staff meetings and training sessions.
