At John Smedley, we’ve been crafting the world’s finest knitwear for over two centuries — and our commitment to excellence is made possible by the people who keep our Mill running efficiently every day. We’re looking for a Production Assistant to join our Production Department at our historic Lea Mills in Matlock.
This essential role ensures that team members always have the materials and work they need, helping maintain the quality, efficiency, and craftsmanship we’re known for worldwide.
What You’ll Do
As a Production Assistant you’ll:
• Sort, organise, and distribute bags of work to keep production flowing efficiently.
• Order, prepare, and deliver yarn to team members across the department.
• Batch work by colour or specification to reduce changeovers and improve productivity.
• Return repairs or rework quickly to support smooth and timely completion.
• Move work safely around the Mill using barrows, cages, or other equipment.
• Help locate priority work and assist with expediting urgent items.
• Maintain a tidy, safe, and well-organised work area.
• Support the Team Leader and Production Manager with a range of operational tasks.
• Build positive working relationships with colleagues to support strong communication and teamwork.
Who You Are
You’ll thrive in this role if you:
• Are organised, methodical, and able to prioritise effectively.
• Have great attention to detail and take pride in supporting smooth production.
• Enjoy working in a hands-on, fast-paced environment.
• Are physically able to lift/carry bags of work and stand for long periods.
• Work well with others and communicate clearly within a team.
• Are proactive, reliable, and motivated to keep operations running at their best.
Skills & Experience You’ll Bring
Desired:
• Experience working in a fast-paced manufacturing or operational environment.
• Previous experience in production support or materials handling.
• Awareness of Health & Safety procedures in an industrial setting.
• An interest in textiles, manufacturing, or learning about knitwear production.
Why John Smedley?
• Be part of a globally recognised British heritage brand.
• Work in a supportive, collaborative, and skilled production environment.
• Contribute directly to the quality of our world-renowned knitwear.
• Access to wellbeing programmes and our in-house Culture Club activities.
• Discounts on hundreds of retail, travel, and leisure services.
• Discounts on John Smedley products.
