Return to Social Work Programme
Are you ready to return to social work practice?
The Return to Social Work Programme is a fully funded CPD opportunity delivered in partnership by:
- The University of Manchester
- Greater Manchester Social Work Academy (GMSWA)
- Cheshire and Merseyside Social Work Teaching Partnership (CMSWTP)
- Blackpool Council
GMSWA includes all ten Greater Manchester local authorities and four universities. CMSWTP includes eight local authorities, two NHS Trusts, one voluntary sector organisation, and four universities.
Who is it for?
This programme is designed for qualified social workers who have been out of practice and want to re-register with Social Work England:
- Out of practice for 25 years:
- 5 taught days
- 20 practice placement days
- 5 private study days
- Out of practice for more than 5 years:
- 5 taught days
- 30 practice placement days
- 25 private study days
What will you learn?
The taught days cover:
- Updates on contemporary social work practice, legislation, legal literacy, policy, safeguarding, and mental health social work.
- Guidance on using research and evidence to inform practice.
- Opportunities to meet employers, gain interview tips, and prepare for returning to work.
Practice Placements
Placements are arranged in Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Merseyside, or Blackpool. You’ll return to a practice setting within a local authority or statutory team, supported by a practice supervisor. Private study is also required to meet Social Work England re-registration requirements, with guidance provided throughout.
Free Places Available
There are 45 fully funded places for social workers who:
- Live in Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Merseyside, or Blackpool and/or
- Plan to practice in these regions after re-registering.
Priority will be given to applicants intending to work in these areas. If places remain, applicants from across the North West will be considered.
Funding is provided by the Department for Education North West Regional Improvement Plan Pilot (RIPP).

- Day 1: Monday 9 February 2026 In person (Manchester)
- Day 2: Tuesday 10 February 2026 Online
- Day 3: Wednesday 11 February 2026 Online
- Day 4: Thursday 12 February 2026 Online
- Placements start: From 13 April 2026
- Day 5: Tuesday 16 June 2026 In person (Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Merseyside, or Blackpool)
