Responsibility for Patient/Service User Care To promote and deliver a high standard of care based on best practice to maintain patient/service user safety and provide an excellent service. To provide specialist knowledge and advice on the assessment of patients/service users complex moving and handling needs including individuals with unconfirmed diagnosis. To coordinate the development, implementation and evaluation of specialised programmes of care utilising evidence and research. To lead the moving and handling service to provide specialist advice in acute and chronic situations ensuring that the patients/services users needs are met along with their support network. To ensure patient/service user involvement in the planning, delivery and evaluation of their moving and handling care needs, respecting their beliefs and dignity. To utilise data and information from a range of sources to identify patient/service user condition to guide decision making. To undertake the role of health promoter and educator for patients/service users with complex moving and handling needs and their support networks. To ensure that professional moving and handling standards are upheld by the staff members across Health and Social Care. To manage all incidents as per policy and participate in risk management and Quality and Safety processes e.g. SWARM. To respond following a moving and handling incident to ensure best practice has been followed and to ensure any immediate learning points have been implemented. To work alongside the Health and Safety team to identify where there is the potential of MSK related injuries and implement measures to promote a safe working environment. To be accountable for ensuring that safeguards are in place for patients/service users and escalate any safety, safeguarding or risk concerns following the appropriate processes. Communication To build and advocate a therapeutic relationship with patients/service users and their support network, as well as staff, communicating with them in a way that respects their views, language, cultural differences and cognitive function. To use and promote a wide range of communication skills that can be adapted to meet the needs of complex and challenging situations. To establish and promote effective working relations with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and outside agencies, clearly relaying condition related information in a timely and effective manner. Communicates to patients/service users and support networks compassionately, in a confidential and sensitive professional manner. To provide clear, concise, and accurate electronic and paper records of the care given in accordance with agreed policy and standards. To lead on and coordinate post event debriefs and clinical supervision in relation to moving and handling, when required. Establish effective working relationships with key stakeholders e.g. Head of Health and Safety, Trade Unions representatives and clinical colleagues. Leadership To act as a professional role model for staff, advocating for patients and service users and promoting high standards of practice and strong professional values. To lead the moving and handling service, horizon scanning and leading on potential new moving and handling practices. To lead and coordinate healthcare professional led and multi-agency activities within area of specialist practice. To lead on the investigation of complaints and clinical incidents related to moving and handling, ensuring that learning is shared with own team and wider HSC. To promote own and team success and excellent standards of care by reflecting, challenging others constructively, upholding HSCs CARE Values. To ensure team members are aware of organisational objectives, policies and procedures and implications that they have for their practice. To undertake Values Based Appraisals for staff as required and support such staff with performance issues, developing action plans to address developmental needs. To lead in the recruitment of team members and ensure a positive and supportive working environment for all staff. To advocate on behalf of patients and service users. To take accountability and reflect on own decisions and actions using available support networks. To undertake regular quality assurance reviews on trainers delivering moving and handling and associated training ensuring that any performance issues are identified, action planned and resolved. Planning and Organisation To organise own workload and that of others, demonstrating the ability to recognise changing priorities and adjusting plans accordingly. To lead on scheduling for the moving and handling service training provision including the appropriate allocation of training staff to ensure effective trainer to staff ratios are met. To lead, coordinate and delegate activities to colleagues where applicable within agreed systems of working, in accordance with patient/service user need. To lead on the design and implementation of moving and handling training programmes suitable for all staff across HSC. Policy and Service Development To lead on the policy review and development of associated moving and handling policies. To lead and contribute to service developments and propose changes to policies and procedures, ensuring that new initiatives are incorporated into working practices of staff. To support the senior management team to initiate and implement improvements using a systematic approach using KPIs and clinical incidents. To ensure that staff members are working with the scope of relevant policies, procedures and guidelines. Partnership Working To work collaboratively with the Health and Safety ensuring a joined-up approach to incident management and risk assessments, ensuring that areas of concern are addressed and reflected in the training provision. To demonstrate an understanding of and apply the principles of the CARE Values. To actively work and promote collaborative working as part of a multi-disciplinary team with a range of professionals from other service areas who may be participating in the care of a patient/service user. To lead effective team working, communicating with others in a constructive way, which enables colleagues to make suggestions for the improvement of care delivery. Through effective negotiation and organisational and political awareness, create an environment for partnership working and dissemination of information across multi-disciplinary teams. To lead and participate in moving and handling link team meetings. Responsibility for Physical and Financial Resources To ensure that public funds are used responsibly and appropriately. To authorise expenditure, e.g. the signing of timesheets and authorising the use of associate trainers. To effectively manage resources within the service area e.g equipment and supplies. To manage expenditure within budget for service area and report to the senior manager, any actual or potential deviations from the budget. To ensure the safe and responsible use of equipment. To ensure all staff handle valuables in accordance with agreed policies and procedures. To support the Learning and Quality Improvement team with income generation ideas and delivery. Professional Development To take responsibility for maintaining own, and that of others within the service, professional development and revalidation requirements, ensuring completion of training in accordance with the Statutory, Mandatory and Essential to Role Training Policy. To maintain own clinical credibility by undertaking regular clinical practice hours. To participate in and lead supervisory one-to-one meetings and HSCs Values Based Appraisal process, developing plans to meet personal and organisational objectives. To continually develop new knowledge and skills, applying this to practice and sharing with colleagues as appropriate. To participate in and develop plans for the induction, orientation and development of new staff, agency workers, students and any voluntary workers. To develop programmes of learning to meet the educational needs of staff working across HSC within the remit of Moving and Handling. To ensure the service area provides an effective learning environment and to supervise and assess pre and post registration students in accordance with University and HSC requirements. Research Development and Audit To lead and coordinate the use of data from clinical incidents and other sources to inform areasof audit activity and service development. To lead HSC quality improvement initiatives and audits to improve patient and service user safety and care. To keep up to date and inform others of changes to evidence-based practice and current trends. To support the Head of Training, Practice Development and Quality Improvement in developing a research hub, promoting evidence-based practice, promoting research activities across HSC and supporting and collaborating on service improvement projects as required. Analysis and Data Management To develop Key Performance Indicators and monitor trends within own service area and lead on service development. To utilise a variety of data sources to contribute to the analysis and investigation of incidents. To utilise information from a range of sources to guide the strategic direction of the moving and handling service. To continuously improve and ensure compliance with Moving and Handling training requirements on HSCs Learning Management System.
