To provide agreed support to adults with intellectual disabilities, their families, carers and the multi-disciplinary team. Specifically, this will relate to the communication needs of an individual, and subsequent environmental needs. Support may be for individuals, environments or providers and is under the direction of qualified Speech and Language Therapists but often delivered without direct supervision, across different multi-agency day and residential settings.

The role will help support the delivery of an efficient and effective Speech and Language Therapy Service to ensure that individual’s with mental health conditions and associated communication and swallowing needs receive the best possible outcomes in relation to their care, treatment and recovery. The SLT service involves providing individual assessment, intervention, advice, training, and a consultative approach and the post-holder will support the qualified SLT to deliver this service. Well-developed IT skills are essential for this post to support production of accessible information and resources. The post holder needs excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work confidently and flexibly with service users, families and support staff within a fast-paced inpatient environment.

To independently carry out agreed communication and eating and drinking support to users of the speech and language therapy service, as directed by a qualified speech and language therapist.

To observe service users in a range of settings and report observations to the speech and language therapist

To participate in assessment alongside speech and language therapists

To work as part of a multi-disciplinary team across a variety of agencies and locations in order to maximise communication opportunities for service users and support eating and drinking needs.

To develop resources to support effective communication and to support others to enhance mealtimes. This will include symbol books, charts, communication profiles, and accessible information literature.

To carry out other administrative duties related to clinical work, such as photocopying and collating materials, data entry and sending out letters

Please note applicants will be required to pay for their DBS check. Costs are deducted from salary following appointment. The cost of the DBS application is £26.40 (standard) or £54.40 (enhanced), this cost will be deducted from your salary over the first 2 months of employment.

You are encouraged to enrol for the DBS Update Service. An annual fee of £16 per year applies.

A full UK driving licence and vehicle for business use is required for this post; however reasonable adjustments will be made for disabled individuals in line with the Equality Act 2010.
