Summary

Clinical Practice Deliver high quality assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care for paediatric orthopaedic patients. Provide specialist nursing input in clinics (fracture, pre-assessment, post-operative review, spinal, limb reconstruction, etc.). Act as a key worker for complex cases, ensuring continuity of care across inpatient, outpatient, and community settings. Support management of children in traction, with casts, braces, or external fixators. Assist in post-operative wound management, pain control, and rehabilitation support. Liaise with the wider MDT (consultants, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, orthotists, and play specialists, safeguarding team). Education and Support Educate children, parents, and carers on procedures, treatments, and ongoing care (e.g., cast care, mobility, and wound management). Contribute to training and development of nursing and medical staff, including students. Develop and update patient information leaflets and educational resources. Service Development With guidance act as a clinical resource and role model within the orthopaedic and paediatric teams. Contribute to clinical guideline development, quality improvement, and audit projects. Participate in service review and redesign to improve patient pathways and outcomes. Contribute to specialist nurse-led clinics as appropriate to competence level. Opportunities for further education and leadership development will be supported. Research and Evidence-Based Practice Promote and implement evidence-based practice in paediatric orthopaedics. Participate in data collection, research, and clinical audit to inform practice. With support disseminate research findings and contribute to publication or presentation when appropriate. Communication Maintain effective communication with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams. Provide emotional support and counselling where appropriate. Ensure accurate, timely documentation and adherence to data protection and safeguarding policies.
