Summary
Applications are invited for the post of Laboratory Technician (Paleoecology) in the Department of Geography, Royal Holloway University of London.
The successful applicant will join a department with an outstanding reputation for its teaching and student support, with some of the strongest ratings for student satisfaction (NSS) in the UK. The post holder will join the department’s technical team who make important and valued contributions to the full range of departmental activities, most critically through the management of the department’s laboratories, field equipment and IT resources. The candidate will have enthusiasm for providing technical support to teaching and research activities and be committed to developing a career in a technical role. They will be a good communicator, working well as part of a team but also able to work independently, managing their own time and priorities.
Duties will include the day-to-day management of our Sediment and Paleoecology Laboratories, providing laboratory support and/or supervision to staff and students completing palaeoecological analyses. The successful candidate will have already acquired general scientific laboratory skills and have some experience of preparing samples for the analysis of palaeoecological proxies such as pollen, chironomids, diatoms and/or macrofossils. Ideally candidates will also be familiar with standard geographical field survey and sample collection techniques, though training can be provided. The role holder must be comfortable demonstrating laboratory and field procedures to students on a regular basis and be able to fully participate on field trips.
