Summary

Job Duties

Core Responsibilities of a Locksmith
• Install and repair locks on doors, windows, safes, and vehicles
• Cut and duplicate keys using key-cutting machines
• Respond to emergency call-outs, including lockouts and post-burglary repairs
• Advise clients on security upgrades and suitable locking systems
• Maintain and repair electronic locks and access control systems
• Create and manage master key systems for buildings or organisations
• Ensure compliance with building codes and safety standards

Skills and Qualities Needed
• Manual dexterity and mechanical aptitude
• Problem-solving skills, especially under pressure
• Customer service and communication skills
• Ability to use hand and power tools
• Basic computer literacy for digital lock systems and record-keeping
• Patience and calmness in stressful situations

Training and Qualifications
• No formal qualifications required, but training courses are available through providers like the Master Locksmiths Association
• Apprenticeships or on-the-job training with established locksmiths
• Backgrounds in carpentry, electronics, or mechanical work are beneficial

Work Environment and Progression
• Work may be mobile, covering homes, businesses, and vehicles
• Often involves outdoor work in all weather conditions
• May require evening, weekend, or bank holiday availability
