Summary
Job Title: Senior Carer / Senior Care Assistant
Reports to: Care Home Manager / Deputy Manager
Job Purpose:
To lead, support, and motivate care staff to deliver high-quality, person-centred care to residents, ensuring their dignity, comfort, and independence are maintained. The Senior Carer acts as a role model and a link between the care team and management, ensuring effective communication and compliance with care standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Resident Care
Provide personal care and support to residents in line with individual care plans.
Promote residents’ independence, dignity, and choice at all times.
Administer medication safely in accordance with company policies and training (where qualified).
Monitor residents’ wellbeing, recording and reporting changes promptly to senior staff or healthcare professionals.
Support residents with mobility, nutrition, hydration, and personal hygiene needs.
Leadership & Supervision
Lead and supervise care assistants during shifts, ensuring tasks are completed to high standards.
Delegate duties effectively and provide hands-on support where needed.
Mentor and train new or junior care staff, promoting a caring, respectful culture.
Conduct spot checks and contribute to staff appraisals or supervision sessions.
Communication & Record Keeping
Maintain accurate care records, medication logs, and daily notes.
Communicate effectively with residents, relatives, colleagues, and healthcare professionals.
Participate in handovers, team meetings, and reviews to ensure continuity of care.
Health, Safety & Compliance
Ensure all care practices comply with CQC (Care Quality Commission) standards and company policies.
Promote and maintain safe working practices, including infection control, safeguarding, and manual handling procedures.
Respond appropriately to emergencies and incidents.
Skills & Qualities:
Compassionate, patient, and respectful toward older people and those with dementia or disabilities.
Strong leadership and communication skills.
Ability to remain calm under pressure and make sound decisions.
Good organisational and time-management skills.
Qualifications & Experience:
NVQ/QCF Level 3 in Health and Social Care (or working towards it).
Previous experience in a care home or similar setting (essential).
Medication administration training (desirable).
Understanding of person-centred care and CQC requirements.
Working Hours:
Full-time or part-time hours, including weekends, evenings, and public holidays, depending on the rota.
Salary:
Typically £12–£15 per hour (varies by location and experience).
