Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Housing Benefit Team. We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic, hardworking, highly motivated, customer focused individual to assist with the supervision of a team within the Benefits service processing Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction claims ensuring that all are determined in accordance with legislative requirements, statutory time limits and internal targets.
The successful candidate will have practical experience of working in a benefits environment enabling a thorough knowledge of Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction legislation, procedures, and best practice.
This post is permanent for 37 hours per week Monday to Friday.
As a Senior Benefits Officer you will also be responsible for gathering evidence and calculating a customer’s entitlement to receive financial assistance towards their rental costs as well as determining entitlement to a reduction in Council Tax liability under Hull City Council’s Council Tax Reduction scheme. Main responsibilities include:

Processing and determining claims accurately and in accordance with the relevant legislation and guidance.
Deputise for the Benefit Assessment Team Leader in their absence.
Assist with the induction, training and mentoring of staff.
Undertake regular projects or specialist work as required.
To access the DWP CIS system to obtain information relating to customers benefits.
To ensure that all appropriate decision letters are issued in a timely manner.
To communicate effectively with customers both over the telephone, email, and letter.
Ideally you will have some knowledge or understanding of welfare benefits, excellent ICT skills and the ability to work under pressure. You should be able to work to individual targets and as part of a team to ensure the team meets their service standards. Within this role you will be working with vulnerable service users and their families.
