BEAR Scotland is a leading provider of highway maintenance services across Scotland. We manage and maintain over 2,000km of Scotland’s trunk road network, tackling just about every imaginable task and working round the clock to help keep Scotland moving.
The North West Trunk Road Unit spans some 1,422km of trunk road through some of the most scenic parts of the country. It covers a huge area of Scotland, from Thurso and Wick in the very north of the Highlands down to Campbeltown in Argyll and Bute, from Uig on Skye to Perth and Stirling.
We have vacancies for Highway Maintenance Operatives to join our existing operations team. The Highway Maintenance Operative will report to Operations Supervisor and Operations Manager and will be responsible to help keeping Scotland moving.
This is a full-time role with Standby Rota and Overtime available.
Responsibilities and Activities
The erection and removal of temporary signs and barriers (permanent signs and barriers).
Preparation, application, compaction and removal of soils, rocks, coated and other materials.
Hot material patching by hand.
Drainage works, excavation, pipe laying, kerb laying, scrub cutting.
Installation and fixing of temporary/permanent road furniture.
Operation of power tools, small plant and machinery.
Driving vehicles including those with simple attachments such as tractors.
Prepare written returns including fault report details.
Responsibility for the health and safety of the public, colleagues and yourself.
Participating in our winter and emergency response service on a standby rota basis.
Winter maintenance duties which include fitting gritter body and blade, driving gritter and spread salt by hand if required.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Previous experience as a roadworker is desirable, however training can be provided.
There is a requirement to undertake training and to achieve competence in aspects of the job.
Knowledge of the requirement for Health and Safety rules and procedures.
Physically fit for working in sometimes arduous conditions.
Experience of using small plant.
Holding tickets for plant, traffic management, and Health and Safety an advantage.
Full UK driving license preferably at LGV Class C level.
