Hours: 10 hours/week (flexible working)
Pay rate: £13ph
Start date: December 2025
Duration: March 2026 – Possible extension (depending on funding)
Location: Partly on-site in a Buckinghamshire school, partly home-based/remote
Reporting to: SEND Transitions Project Lead
Role purpose: Support the creation of a pilot SEND Transitions Service in a Buckinghamshire school
This is an exciting opportunity for a SEND professional to be involved in the creation of an innovative new service for SEND students. We are looking for someone who can "hit the ground running" (or wheeling!) and start designing the new service through close liaison with school staff and students.
This role involves some work in a Buckinghamshire school, and the post holder must therefore be able to travel into the selected school as required. They must also be an appropriate person to work in a SEND school environment.
This is a part-time role. BuDS is committed to fully flexible working, and the post holder will have considerable discretion as to their working hours when working remotely from home. Work within the school environment will need to take place during school hours. The proportion of time spent in school will vary according to the needs of the role.
Background
BuDS has conducted research which demonstrates that a Transitions Service for SEND students will improve educational/employment outcomes and students’ wellbeing and save schools and the local authority both time and money. This role will work closely with BuDS staff and volunteers, and onsite with a selected Buckinghamshire school. The aim is to explore the scope and elements of a transitions service with both school staff and selected students, and to produce an outline service design. Both educational and end of education transitions (i.e. to employment) are included in the potential scope.
BuDS is currently seeking finance to extend this initial pilot beyond (TBA) into the following two school years. If this funding is received, the post-holder will be offered a contract extension and an increase in hours.
Specific Responsibilities
With strong support of the SEND Transitions Project Lead, and as part of the wider BuDS team:
Establish working relationships with partner school staff and selected students
Work closely with school staff and students to explore the scope and elements of a transitions service
With the SEND Transitions Project Lead, produce an outline SEND Transitions Service design
Identify and design resources likely to be needed within the new service, and their accessibility requirements
Provide SEND Transition support to students to test concepts, develop project plan and gather case studies
Person Specification
Knowledge and experience of SEND Transitions within an educational and/or employment setting
Knowledge and experience of working with disabled young people with a range of SEND needs
Knowledge of research methods and ethics, and how to apply these
Ability to support and communicate effectively with SEND students in small groups and 1-2-1 settings
Working knowledge of using MS 365 and Teams
Strong planning and organising skills
Ability to build relationships and support others
Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with a wide variety of people including disabled people with impairments of all types
Ability to maintain confidentiality and keep private information to themselves
Understanding and commitment to the Social Model of disability – see https://buds.org.uk/the-social-model-of-disability/
BuDS is an equal opportunity organisation, and disabled people are particularly encouraged to apply for this role.
BuDS is committed to safeguarding all those with whom it works. This post will involve unsupervised work with potentially vulnerable adults and children, and/or their records, and so this post will be subject to an enhanced DBS check on appointment for both children and adults workforce. This will be arranged and paid for by BuDS. Work and character references will also be taken up.
