Summary

Looking for an opportunity to work at the interface between the aircraft industry and academia on the numerical simulation and design of future air transportation systems? We have an exciting opportunity to do just that in one of the UK’s most dynamic centres for engineering research and education.
Working with industrial partners, you will develop and contribute to new areas of research that will benefit society by advancing technologies that will underpin the design of the next generation of transport aircraft. Specifically, you will develop, test, and industrialise algorithms designed to simulate and optimise the operation and design of aircraft systems, subject to complex, real-world constraints.
You will join a growing team of engineers working on a range of digital design technologies, ranging from AI to novel geometry modelling techniques. While this position is initially for a fixed term period, depending on the success of the role, opportunities will be explored to extend it beyond this initial period.
To be successful you will need a track record of developing, testing, and delivering high quality code to tight deadlines, to solve engineering problems. Ideally you will also have experience in numerical modelling and analysis, particularly in optimisation and/or complex mechanical systems simulation, as well as having a solid understanding of aircraft design and aviation in general. You will hold a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in aeronautical or mechanical or software engineering, physics, or in computer science/numerical analysis.
About the University
The University of Southampton is an institution in the top one per cent of world universities* and one of the UK’s top 15 research-intensive universities. We have an international reputation for research, teaching and enterprise and hold an Athena SWAN Silver award.
About the Faculty
You will be joining a department, which runs an Aeronautics and Astronautics course ranked second in the UK (out of 33) by the Complete University Guide 2026. The Faculty has an excellent record of collaborative research with industry and academic institutions in the UK and abroad. In September 2013 an Athena SWAN Bronze award was received by the School of Engineering in recognition of our continued commitment to improving equality for women in science and engineering.
The Faculty offers exceptional research facilities, including wind tunnels, flight simulators, structural testing laboratories, a new world-class fluid dynamics facilities complex in the Boldrewood Engineering Campus (complete with a 138m towing tank), and much else.
Informal enquiries to Professor András Sóbester (a.sobester@soton.ac.uk).
At the University of Southampton, we value diversity and equality.
