Job purpose:
■ To provide a positive role model to a young person of 13 years old and to support him to access activities in the community.
About the employer:
■ The young person is male and 13 years old. He likes scooter riding, golf, bowling, go karting, playing pool and darts. He has a very good sense of humour and is very sociable. He has ADHD and Autism and sometimes struggles to understand what is appropriate behaviour or language in different social settings. He would benefit from a personal assistant who could spend time with him doing social activities and modelling positive social behaviour and interactions. He does not have any physical disabilities or needs.
Main duties:
■ Social duties, for example, support to:
■ interact with others in social situations
■ attend social events such as skate parks, cinema, bowling
■ use public transport
These duties may vary from day to day.
Type of person that we are looking for must be:
Honest, reliable, punctual, with an ability to build a good relationship with a teenage boy. An interest in some of the same things he is interested in, and a good sense of humour, would be an advantage. Must also be able to be calm and consistent with boundaries and rules. Previous experience with persons with autism or ADHD would be an advantage.
What you can expect to receive:
Full training will be given and you will be continually supported and especially during induction and the first few weeks of working with the young person. There is access to training opportunities provided by Leeds city council and good rate of pay.
Hours of work:
4 hours per week. Days and hours can be flexible and mutually agreed.
Skills, qualifications and experience:
Essential:
■ honest and reliable
■ able to stay calm under pressure and consistently apply rules and boundaries
■ good sense of humour
■ good at building relationships with a teenage boy
■ able to explain things clearly and simply
■ able to model and encourage positive social behaviour and language
Preferred:
■ some previous experience with persons with ADHD or autism would be an advantage
■ likes some of the things the young person is interested in (eg scooting, golf, bowling, computer games, go karting)
Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed before a trial meeting with the young person.
