Pay rate: £14.84 per hour PAYE
The role:
We are seeking a proactive and creative Communications and Media Officer to join a dynamic team.
This role plays a vital part in promoting the work of the Council, its services, strategies and successes – building positive relationships with elected members, officers, media organisations, partners, and the wider community.
You’ll support the delivery of effective internal and external communications, help manage the media presence, and play a key role in shaping the way the organisation engages with our audiences through a variety of channels, including press, digital platforms and events.
Key Responsibilities:
Develop and deliver professional communications content across media, social platforms, and Council channels
Create engaging press releases, social media posts, video, and online content to promote the Council’s work
Respond promptly and appropriately to media enquiries, and manage media coverage, including forward planning and monitoring
Attend Council and Civic events to capture stories and opportunities for promotion
Provide communications advice and support to staff and elected members across all service units
Assist in the development of strategies and campaigns that promote the Borough and the Council’s work
Maintain and update the Council’s websites and social media accounts, ensuring accurate and timely communication
Contribute to the review and continuous improvement of communication activities, making best use of digital marketing tools and trends
Support internal communications and ensure brand consistency across all corporate communications
What the client is looking for:
Educated to Level 3 (or equivalent) in a relevant subject, with strong numeracy and literacy skills
Recent, hands-on experience in one or more of the following: media relations, journalism, or social media communications
Confident in engaging with the public, with a professional and approachable manner
A strong ambassador for the Council – calm, credible, and professional at all times
Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
Proficient IT skills in a range of computer software packages, including Microsoft Office and use of the internet
Committed to delivering excellent customer service
Skilled in handling sensitive, complex, and confidential enquiries with discretion and efficiency
Highly organised, able to manage time effectively, meet tight deadlines, and keep accurate records
Excellent administrative and organisational skills
Confident in building networks and maintaining strong relationships with external agencies and partners
Diplomatic and tactful in all dealings with the public, staff, Councillors, and colleagues
Energetic, motivated, and enthusiastic – with a can-do attitude
