Summary

Job Summary – South Hams District Council are looking for a graduate to promote the awareness and understanding of the Life on The Edge (LotE) project. This is a South Devon National Landscapes’ (SDNL) flagship nature recovery project, centered around the restoration and enhancement of habitats along the South Devon coast which will aid the conservation of 30 rare and threatened invertebrates. Supported by the SDNL Communications Officer, you will assist in the promotion of a wide range of LotE project activity. This consists of an assortment of community engagement events, aimed at local South Devon target and general audiences. This post will assist in managing existing communication channels, whist also helping develop new areas and ideas, enabling the project to reach existing and new audiences. This role is part of the Graduate Business Partnership Scheme and is available immediately for 18.5 hours per week on a 12-month contract. You will be based at the SDNL office within Follaton House in Totnes, with scope for some agile working and assisting with onsite project delivery. You will be a University of Exeter member of staff seconded to South Hams District Council for the duration which means you will have access to the benefits on offer from both organisations. A driving licence is essential for travelling to and from sites for events or activities within the South Devon National Landscape. Please confirm you have a licence in your application. About You – You should be a graduate who has the ability to communicate in a lively and persuasive manner through a range of media including publications, press, events, the Web, social media, newsletters and presentations, and has the ability to engage positively with a wide range of groups and individuals. You should have experience of using Microsoft Office, of using Canva or Mail Chimp and use of photographic and video apps or equipment. You should have experience of using social media posting/campaign delivery on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok, and the ability to express complex issues clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing. You should have excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong organisational skills, excellent IT skills, and some knowledge of UK wildlife as well as ecosystem services/natural solutions relating to climate and biodiversity, health, pollination, tourism and recreation, and have a have a keen interest in the natural environment, land use, ecosystem services/natural solutions and community engagement, be a team player, have people skills, be proactive enthusiastic, confident, self-motivated and able to work, have a strong level of creativity and innovation, and be a strategic thinker. You should have an understanding of Protected Landscapes, have genuine knowledge of and interest in a key area of SDNL work – landscape, wildlife, heritage, environment, farming, biodiversity or rural communities, and have a particular interest in the Life on the Edge project. You should also have experience of event organisation, communications, web editing, general administration, and of working in the natural environment and or community/farming sectors.
