Under the direction of the Head Teacher, the Learning Support Assistant is expected to support the delivery of high quality primary education and learning which effectively meets the needs of children.
The main duties of the Learning Support Assistant are:-
- To support and work closely with the teacher in delivering a quality curriculum, linked to local and national guidelines;
- To work closely with the teacher in implementing the planned learning experiences, including taking groups for specific activities, and supporting the children’s development and learning;
- To help set up and organise active learning within the classroom and central areas;
- To prepare and organise resources to be used in learning and teaching activities;
- To work closely with the teacher in setting up displays to stimulate children’s learning and interest;
- To work closely with the teacher to observe individual children and keep appropriate notes;
- To participate in school outings, adhering to health and safety guidelines;

Baltasound Junior High School is a non-denominational school located in Unst. It provides nursery, primary and secondary education up to S4 for children from the island of Unst. The structure of the school is 1 nursery, 3 composite primary classes and S1-4 classes. There is currently a total of 95 pupils on the roll. The school is managed by a Head Teacher and 1 Depute Head Teacher. The current staffing complement is 15 teachers assisted by support staff as required to meet school demands. - Please note that this job is not Career Graded. What this means is that a successful candidate would be employed as either a Qualified or Unqualified Learning Support Assistant. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed to determine whether they meet the person specification criteria of the qualified or unqualified Learning Support Assistant role. This would determine the salary/rate of pay, as well as what duties would be expected of the post holder during their employment. - Rate of pay shown in the advert is inclusive of Distant Islands Allowance of £1.4808 per hour
- Permanent Part Time post for 7.0 Hours per Week , 39 weeks per year plus 6.24 weeks (pro rata) paid holiday to be taken during school holidays
- Preferred candidates will be required to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update prior to a formal offer of employment being made
