Summary
The East Midlands area team is responsible for the counties of Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland. Our area includes the iconic landscape of the Peak District, an extensive coastline, the rolling chalk hills of the Lincolnshire Wolds, a large part of the National Forest, Sherwood Forest and the Rutland water reservoir and nature reserve. The major cities of Nottingham, Lincoln, Derby and Leicester, provide important opportunities to work with partners to focus on environmental outcomes that support local communities. This is an exciting time to join the East Midlands as area teams increasingly focus their delivery on a portfolio of priority places, with the view to accelerating our impact to achieve gains for nature and for the benefits of nature to people. We will be positioning our own place-based delivery working with a range of local partners, from within the environmental sector and beyond.
Natural England's mission is building partnerships for nature’s recovery. This reflects the need for us to work with and through a wide range of people and the need for rapid action to protect and restore habitats, species, and landscapes in line with Government’s Environmental Improvement Plan. This work includes building a greater understanding and connection with communities locally, so they value, and can benefit from, the natural environment.
We are seeking a highly motivated, professional individual with a passion for nature conservation woodland management, to help deliver the EU grant-funded LIFE in the Ravines (LITR) partnership project.
The LITR project is centred within the ravine woodlands of the Peak District Dales Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and is working to:
• Restore more than 800ha of the Peak District Dales Special Area of Conservation’s mixed ravine woodland which are currently dominated by ash
• Diversify existing woodland structures to ensure long term viability and to lessen the impacts climate change and future diseases
• Inspire and promote a better understanding of the value of natural ravine woodland and promote best practice in restoration techniques and practices.
The project is a joint effort between Natural England and a number of partners including Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, the National Trust, the Chatsworth Estate, the Peak District National Park, Staffordshire Wildlife Trust and other stakeholders.
Job description
The project needs an Engagement & Communications Officer to complete its delivery. This postholder will join the core LITR team which comprises a Project Manager, a Finance Officer, a Team Leader and site-based Woodland Restoration staff. An understanding of woodland management and biodiversity would be advantageous but is not essential as technical input will be provided by NE specialist staff.
This role provides critical communications and engagement expertise (and support to to the Engagement and Communications Higher Officer) to meet our obligations agreed with the European Union when they approved our project and agreed to provide the funding.
