A 1.0 WTE vacancy has arisen for a highly motivated and enthusiastic applicant to join the Cancer Psychological Support (CaPS) Team. St George’s Hospital is a large teaching hospital in South West London with a broad range of medical and surgical specialties, including a busy cancer service.
The CaPS service offers specialist psychological support and mental health expertise to those affected by a diagnosis of cancer and its treatment. The team is made up of experienced clinicians who are able to work with patients to address their psychological and emotional needs using a range of evidence-based interventions.
You would be working alongside colleagues from clinical psychology, systemic family therapy and liaison psychiatry. This role will involve supporting the day to day work of the CaPS team, including assisting with patient triage, service developments, supporting outcome measurement and data collection/analysis. Other clinically related and patient-facing tasks would also be required including researching and liaising with other services and healthcare professionals, and opportunities may arise to support clinicians in individual therapy work.
You would have regular supervision with a clinical psychologist and the opportunity to observe clinical work as well as having your own responsibilities. The successful candidate would need to be motivated, organised and enthusiastic with excellent communication skills and an ability to work as part of a team. It is not necessary to have experience in working with those affected by cancer, although an interest in psychology as related to physical health conditions would be valued. Research, staff training and education across cancer services form a significant part of the work of the CaPS team. There will also be opportunities to support in service evaluation and audit, so strong skills working with data and research methods would also be beneficial.
Please note that due to anticipated high levels of interest in this position, we will be capping applications so please apply promptly to avoid disappointment. You are also advised to keep your personal statement at the end of the application to no more than 800 words – longer statements will not be read.
Due to the anticipated interest in this post we will also not be able to provide visits to the department before the interview date.
The post holder will be provided with regular supervision and support from a senior psychological therapist. Peer supervision sessions are also arranged on a regular basis with input from experienced clinical / counselling psychologists across Clinical Health Psychology. The Department of Clinical Neuropsychology and Clinical Health Psychology is committed to continuing professional development and career progression. The Department also has excellent links with St George’s Hospital Medical School and the University of Surrey and actively supports research.
St George’s, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals and Health Group cares for a population of four million people in South West London and North East Surrey. Our sites include St George’s Hospital, one of 11 major trauma centres in the UK and the largest healthcare provider and major teaching hospital in the area; St Helier Hospital, home to the South West Thames Renal and Transplantation Unit and Queen Mary's Hospital for Children; and Epsom Hospital, home to the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC).
After years of collaboration, our two Trusts became a hospitals group in 2021. While remaining as two separate Trusts, being a hospitals group will help us to collaborate more closely on research, and the development, education, and training of our 17,000-strong workforce.
