Summary


This is an exciting opportunity for a 6-month fixed term appointment in the Critical Care Unit within the Northern Care Alliance, with an option to extend dependent on progress.

The Intensive Care Units in Salford and Fairfield General hospital combined to form a single Shared Critical Care service. This job will primarily be based at Salford but will involve rotation across both sites.

Salford ICU is a busy tertiary referral adult ICU with capacity up to 40 beds over 5 ‘Pods’ covering medicine, surgery, neurosciences, renal and other tertiary services. With the opening of the new Greater Manchester Major Trauma Hospital, we expect our workload in major trauma to continue to expand. Fairfield Hospital intensive care unit provides resuscitation and stabilisation for level 3 patients as well as high dependency care for level 2.

Thirty consultants provide a service to the patients on the ICU. The consultant body includes intensivists with backgrounds in anaesthesia, respiratory medicine, academia, emergency medicine and acute medicine. The non-consultant medical staff includes rotating trainees from the Foundation Programme, ACCS, Anaesthesia, Internal Medicine and Intensive Care Medicine. In addition we have a dedicated group of ACCPs and non-rotating Clinical Fellows. The unit is supported by a large multi-disciplinary team of nurses, pharmacists and AHPs.

The main roles of this position will be to:

· Perform detailed daily reviews on ICU patients and present findings on the MDT ward round

· Admit, stabilise and formulate an initial management plan for critically unwell adults under the supervision of the Consultant or Senior Trainee

· Gain competence and experience in the insertion of central venous and arterial lines, lumbar puncture and other procedures.



There is opportunity to gain specific interests depending on the individual. This might include Ultrasound, Education, Neurocritical care, Research or QI for example.

· You must have a recognised medical qualification and full registration with the General Medical Council.



· It will be a condition of your appointment to undergo a formal medical screening.



· This post isnotrecognised for postgraduate training. The Trust will therefore be required to apply for a work permit on your behalf if you do not have an unlimited right to live and work in the European Economic Area.



· It is not anticipated that removal expenses will be offered.
