A vacancy has arisen for a Band 6 Biomedical Scientist in Haematology and Blood Transfusion Blood Sciences at St Helier Hospital. The role involves rotation through routine and specialist sections in our very busy haematology, coagulation and blood transfusion laboratories.

Telepath LIMS is currently in use at ESTH, analysers include Sysmex XN and CN and Immucor BT analysers, but we are soon to change to Beckman Coulter DxH FBC analysers and ACL Top coagulation analysers

Currently we provide an out of hours service including extended day, weekend and night work after a period of suitable training, although this is subject to change in the near future

South West London Pathology is an award winning pathology partnership between four leading Hospital Trusts – St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Epsom and St Helier University Hospital Trust and Croydon Health Services NHS Trust

The Role:

This post is based at St Helier Hospital Clinical Blood Sciences Laboratory (CBS) however the post holder may be required to work at any of the South West London Pathology sites as and when necessary.

The St Helier Hospital CBS Laboratory operates an out of hours rotered system, providing cover to a busy A&E and acute services. The Laboratory is equipped with Sysmex XN, CN and Starsedd analysers for pre/post analytics Haematology and coagulation services, as well as Imumucor for automated Blood Transfusion services. The blood transfusion department delivers a wide range of pre-transfusion and antenatal investigations on site, and provides blood products to support trauma, surgical, renal and oncology patients.


The Specialist Biomedical Scientist role requires a motivated HCPC registered BMS seeking experience in a busy acute laboratory.
Successful candidate will be expected to participate in the current out of hours shift system after suitable training.

The role involves rotation through the sections of the laboratory (blood transfusion, haematology and coagulation) providing service for our busy acute hospital. You will be responsible for providing high quality results while maintaining the standards of the HCPC and ISO 15189. You will be involved in training colleagues, and expected to fully participate in the 24/7 rota.
