Summary
All applicants must be able to demonstrate right to work in the UK. ( We do not sponsor or issue work visas)
This is a temporary position for approximately 6 month time. Starting in the February 2025
Planting
1) Planting is by a semi-automatic 12 row planting machine, we plant lettuce plants every week from the middle of February through to the end of August, you will be part of a team of 12 people, the process involves standing on the planter, taking plants from trays and feeding them into the machine, you will also take turns to walk behind the planter, filling in any gaps the machine has left.
2) You will be required to work for other departments on the farm, harvesting, helping the covers team and weeding, this can be physically demanding work but critical to the business, so you must be prepared to swap roles when necessary.
3) 9 members of the team will work on the machine; two people will drive tractors and one/two people will be on the trailer loading the trays onto the planter and removing the empties. (A fixed bonus is paid for the trailer person). Two people will also be required to drive the minibuses for the team, these people will be paid for travelling time to and from the field.
We are looking for two tractor drivers, one to drive tractor and trailers beside the planter in the field and one to ferry tractors and trailers from the yard to the field and back, then while you are waiting for an empty trailer, you will help the people walking behind the machine or the person on the trailer. We are also looking for somebody to help share the work on the trailer, this involves putting the trays full of plants onto the machine, stacking the empties and keeping a record of how many trays have been planted, it is a physical job, English speaking would be an advantage for this role, you would split your time carrying out this job, and then working on the planter with the rest of the team. Then we are looking for one general planter operator to work with the team.
4) Your working day can be at any time over a 24hr period, 7 days a week. Minimum of one day off per week and a minimum of 11 hours in between each shift. Normal planting working hours are 7 o’clock start to 6 – 6.30 O’clock finish. Payment on planting and harvest is piece work, planting is at the same rate as this year, £0.48/tray. (You will get paid breakdown time, hourly rate, if the planter is broken down for more than 30 minutes at a time). Covers and weeding will be hourly paid.
5) For 2-3 weeks from the middle of August, we plant on rented land in Suffolk which is 2.5 hours away from the main farm, you will move into accommodation there for this period of time.
6) If you come on the planting team and have pre-settled or settled status, there is the opportunity to stay at Jepco on the Harvest teams until November.
7) Accommodation is in a self-contained unit away from the rest of the workforce, with all relevant facilities in a brick built building.
