Summary


The post holder will be responsible for the continuing development of a high standard of religious, pastoral and spiritual care for Muslim patients, their relatives, Muslim staff and visitors in the OUH NHS Foundation Trust.

The post holder will be part of a very experienced and open multi-faith chaplaincy team in a very large NHS Trust. The scope of work is very large and the Trust covers many regional specialities as well as being a major trauma centre.

This exciting post requires a compassionate and resourceful chaplain with significant pastoral experience. We are looking for someone who feels a calling to continue the development of a high standard of pastoral, spiritual and religious care for patients, staff and families across a large Trust.

The post will be 12.5 hrs per week with additional on call. The post-holder will be an integral member of a strong and supportive ecumenical and multi faith chaplaincy team serving across three of the four sites of the Oxford University Hospital Trust, the John Radcliffe Hospital which is a major trauma centre. the Churchill hospital which is mostly treats cancer and transplant patients the Nuffield Orthopaedic Hospital and Sobell House Hospice. Also cover for the Horton Hospital and Katherine House Hospice in Banbury. The on call is for all of the above sites. The ability to drive is essential

The post is open to Muslim faith leaders and pastoral carers and the applicant must be experienced in pastoral care and have knowledge and understanding of the NHS

The post holder will be responsible for the continuing development of a high standard of
religious, pastoral and spiritual care for Muslim patients, their relatives, Muslim staff and visitors in the OUH NHS Foundation Trust.
The post holder will work with the Lead Chaplain in the provision of chaplaincy services.
The duties and responsibilities of the post holder require a substantial commitment to an
on-call rota and to ensure continuity of service during periods of leave.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. To be responsible to the Lead Chaplain for the day-to-day provision and
development of Muslim pastoral, religious and spiritual care for patients,
staff, visitors in what are sometimes very highly complex situations and to
confidentially record their activities as part of the chaplaincy data system.
2. To work collaboratively with other members of the chaplaincy team, attending regular team meetings and playing a full part in the development of chaplaincy
policies and implementation across the Trust.
3. To organise for Friday (Jummah) prayers to be accessible on all Trust sites.
4. To ensure appropriate religious pastoral support for dying Muslim
patients and their families and to respond, when requested, to the needs of the recently bereaved.
5. To prepare and deliver high quality training, development, and information for clinical colleagues on the nature of spiritual care of Muslim patients and the contribution of the chaplaincy services.
6. To be fully conversant with NHS and professional protocols, guidelines, and competencies for NHS chaplaincy services.
7. To advise the Lead Chaplain on resources required to ensure that the spiritual, pastoral and religious needs of Muslim patients are met.
8. To take an active role in promoting understanding and application of spiritual care of Muslim patients across all ages within the OUH NHS Foundation Trust and maintain a stock of religious resources
9. To provide pastoral (and spiritual resources when requested) for Muslim
parents and families experiencing the expected and unexpected loss of a child.
10. To participate fully in the 24 hour chaplaincy on-call service. It is expected that the chaplaincy work will be of irregular hours, so that flexibility of working hours and practice is required which requires holding and responding to a pager and mobile phone for on call duties.
11. To be responsible for the creation and management of the Muslim on call rota, working with the Lead Chaplain and colleagues from the Muslim community authorised by the Trust as volunteers or Honorary Chaplains.
12. To provide (when requested) pastoral and spiritual support for Muslim relatives making visits to the mortuary to view a deceased adult or child and to pray as appropriate.
13. To provide staff support following very complex and demanding clinical situations.
14. To be available to faith community leaders in order to support them in
their care for community members when in hospital, always remembering NHS and professional guidelines for patient confidentiality.
15. To work collaboratively with key allied professionals to develop learning and working practise together.
16. To have a commitment to one’s own professional and spiritual growth and development.
17. To be accountable to the Lead Chaplain and team colleagues who manage the Chaplaincy charitable funds for any donations received in the course of ministry within the OUH hospitals.
