Summary

Key Responsibilities To ensure safe quality care is provided for patients within the Unit as Trust and Unit policy. Manage the team as a team leader, participating as an active member of the scrub and circulating team in a designated highly specialist area without supervision as appropriate using all forms of knowledge, skills and experience required in order to be able to undertake the duties competently such as check the instruments and implants for the list and any other equipment that is necessary. To demonstrate a high level of communication and relationship skills promoting and maintaining effective liaison throughout the Unit team and with the wider multidisciplinary team. Support the Co-ordinator in the effective and efficient management of the unit to include liaising with Recovery about amendments or changes to list (this will affect availability of instruments), informing all relevant members of the team and the Co-ordinator of the above. To organise the multidisciplinary staff allocated to your control on a daily basis. Be responsible for ensuring own Theatre list runs smoothly and safely; this involves extensive co-operation and communication with the whole multidisciplinary team. Ensure the Health and Safety of all staff, patients and visitors, reporting all incidents/accidents/near misses to the Co-ordinator as a Team Leader. You will also be responsible for documenting and monitoring the safe use of all equipment (some of which is expensive and requires skill/training to use), and economic use of supplies. To maintain an understanding of and adhere to all Trust and Unit policies and procedures and ensure attendance of mandatory annual training e.g. Fire, Manual Handling, CPR etc. To have an understanding of Risk Management. General Duties and Responsibilities To enhance patient care by ensuring effective assessment of patients needs, this includes making complex decisions on issues surrounding surgical emergencies/problems requiring immediate action and co-ordinating the requirements of specialist surgery out of hours, using and developing extensive knowledge and skills underpinned by theoretical knowledge or relevant practical experience across all sub-specialisations of orthopaedic surgery, carried out within the Trust. Be responsible for delivering personal patient programmes of care and for continual assessment, evaluation and updating of same. To have communication and relationship skills to sensitively deal with patients and relatives who may be distressed, disorientated or anxious such as dignity of the unconscious patient, correct positioning of the patient and protection of pressure areas. Supporting and reassuring patients undergoing surgery with local and spinal anaesthesia and to be able to deliver highly sensitive or unwelcome information in an appropriate and empathetic manner; this may be required daily. Be responsible for repair, maintenance and safe use of equipment ensuring competent knowledge and fault-finding skills. Responsible for ensuring correct provision of all cumulative parts of prosthesis implantation, pre-operatively, peri-operatively and post-operatively, involving auditing and adherence to protocol. Daily liaise with and assist the appropriate clinical specialists in relation to individual patient care and evaluate the requirements for surgery to include both intrinsic and extrinsic requirements i.e. environment, lighting and peripheral requirements. Ensure personally that all Nursing & Midwifery Council, Healthcare Professions Council and Continuing Professional Development requirements are met. Take responsibility for developing the clinical skills of new and newly qualified staff within your area, acting as their mentor/preceptor and are trained to a competent level under appropriate supervision. Ensure Trust policies and procedures are met in relation to personal professional responsibilities. Ensure Unit policies and procedures are proposed and developed, documented and adhered to. Ensure own mandatory training is completed annually as required. Constantly act as a role model and resource for junior members of staff. Be responsible for ordering, storing, dispensing and recording of drugs in accordance with Trust policy. Order by verbal, written and electronic means, record electronically or written as appropriate. Daily input and retrieve patient information appropriate to the Unit from the Trust information technology systems including EPR, PAS Theatre Management System, TIMS, TIS and Fingerprint. To participate in auditing, supporting and implementing necessary changes and service improvements in the Unit. Audits are carried out daily, weekly and monthly. Undertaking clinical trials on a regular basis i.e. new equipment/surgical procedures. At all times to be responsible for appropriate control and management of resources. Act as a link nurse, maintaining a learning environment for colleagues. To communicate efficiently and effectively with the multidisciplinary team, other departments withinthe Trust. Keep your Line Manager informed of changes in circumstances that may affect the delivery of safe high quality patient care. Responsible for the Department in the absence of you line manager. This may involve emergency work out of hours whatever the emergency may be. Keep abreast of current and future nursing and peri-operative trends. Working within a highly specialised area, regularly exposed to new and unfamiliar surgical techniques and equipment, encompassing all knowledge, experience and skills. Promote an environment of openness and support for all staff, patients and visitors.
