Summary

DWP. Digital with Purpose.

Are you looking for a career in tech?

Do you want to learn how to be a Software or Test Engineer?

Want to learn as you earn? You'll work towards a qualification, and do work on products and services that will be used by millions (and which will look great on your CV)?

This is a permanent role with a starting salary of £29,500, as well as great benefits and flexible working.

You'll be part of the UK's largest government department, as well as a thriving Engineering community with access to learning, mentoring and loads of other support.

Tell me about the apprenticeship

We have apprenticeships in Software Engineering, Application Engineering and Test Engineering. You'll be able to indicate your preference when you apply.

This is a Level 4 digital apprenticeship. We're looking to hire people to be future leaders and experts in Engineering.

As an Apprentice Engineer you'll be hands-on with the design, development and maintenance of real stuff that will be used by people across the UK.

So, you'll learn on the job alongside our brilliant, expert team. But you'll also be studying towards gaining a Level 4 engineering apprenticeship qualification via Makers Academy.

You'll be given about 20% of your work time to focus on your qualification.

You will be supported by your line manager, skills coach and the engineering community, as well as fellow apprentices on the programme.

You don't need any prior experience or IT qualifications. But there is a lot to do and learn, so you need to be ready to work hard and participate in the many opportunities you will be given.

Are you ready?

We're very keen to attract a broad range of applicants from diverse backgrounds. If you have the right motivation and attitude, and you want to launch a career in tech then we want to hear from you.

We're looking for apprentices who have the following:

  • Attention to detail
  • Good communication skills
  • Good problem-solving skills,
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to balance work and study, and passion for learning new things.

How do I apply?

You will work through a largely self-selecting application process run by Makers Academy.

This process is designed to enable you to try coding and to help you understand if you are suitable for the apprenticeship.

Apply by:

  • Registering your details with Makers Academy and completing your application by Wednesday 18th September 2024.
  • Complete a coding course and challenge within 10 days (by Tuesday 1st October, on successful completion progressing to an interview).
  • Interviews with Makers Academy will be held from Monday 16th September up to Friday 18th October.
  • Final interviews with DWP Digital are expected to be held from Monday 23rd October until Friday 1st November. Dates will be confirmed should you be successful.

Following a successful interview, we are hoping to make offers by early November and will then begin necessary onboarding and checks with a target start in January 2025.

Entry Requirements:

  • You hold a current United Kingdom (UK) or EAA Passport, and NI number
  • You've lived in the UK and/or EEA for the past 3 years
  • You're eligible to work in the UK and are not in full-time education (at the time the apprenticeship starts)
  • Either hold GCSEs in Maths and English at Grade C/4 or above. Or you can complete and pass a functional skills tests if you don't have these GCSEs.
  • You must not hold an existing qualification at the same or higher level in a similar subject. Makers will decide what a 'similar' qualification is. If you're not sure, then apply and let them make the decision.

There has never been a more exciting time to get involved in a digital apprenticeship with DWP Digital.
