Summary

The role of Caretaker is a part- time, permanent role in Mind the Gap’s busy team.
The job involves being a keyholder for the building, which means the Caretaker is responsible for locking up and setting the security alarm at the end of the day.

The Caretaker will also be responsible for cleaning our workspace in Lister Mills (also known as Manningham Mills). It is a Grade 2 Listed Building, so there are some special requirements that need to be followed. The workspace includes a main large office, some smaller offices and three “Studios” which are used for different arts and creative activities.

The spaces are over two floors. The building is used by between 30 to 70 people each day on Mondays to Fridays.

There are occasional odd jobs that involve fixing things and it’s helpful if the Caretaker can do some of those jobs, but not essential. The job also involves setting up spaces for people hiring Mind the Gap studios from time to time.

We are looking for someone who takes pride in keeping everything clean, neat and in its place.

Key areas of responsibility

1. To be a keyholder for the building

2. To lock-up the building, following all the necessary security procedures. Occasionally, you might be responsible for opening the building as well.

3. To be a named contact (including telephone number) on relevant emergency call-out lists e.g. the intruder and fire alarm companies.

4. To be carry out daily cleaning tasks to ensure Mind the Gap Studios are kept hygienic, tidy and safe.

5. To clean, maintain and securely store equipment and resources which may be used by the company.

6. To oversee stock levels of cleaning materials and other relevant facilities items; to inform the Company Administrator when stock levels are low and require replenishing.

7. To report any maintenance or health and safety problems to the Company Administrator. You may be asked to take action if appropriate; for example, undertaking non-specialist repairs.

8. To contribute to risk assessments for spaces, activities and projects.

9. To assist with setting up rooms (e.g. moving furniture and equipment) to meet the needs of Mind the Gap and external hires.

10. To attend Building Management meetings which happen every fortnight.

General expectations and responsibilities

Mind the Gap’s Employment Handbook sets out in detail the company’s policies and procedures. It forms an essential part of the contractual arrangement between the company and its employees.

In their daily conduct all staff are required to:

• Be flexible, constructive and adaptable.

• Be respectful to colleagues including learning-disabled company members and to work co-operatively with other team members including freelance staff.

• Support the induction of new staff in Mind the Gap policies and procedures.

• Manage their own administrative tasks e.g. answering phones and dealing with post and emails to support the smooth running of the company.

• Work within agreed budgets and to supply relevant records of expenditure and receipts in accordance with the company’s financial accounting systems.

• Participate in and contribute to individual appraisal, one-to-one support and review processes.

• Participate in training as required.

• Contribute positively and constructively to monitoring, evaluation and review procedures as required by the company and funding / stakeholder bodies.

• Actively support the engagement of people with learning disabilities in all areas of Mind the Gap’s work.

• Provide supervision to ensure the welfare and health & safety of company members when required, e.g. at lunchtimes and breaks.

• Respect issues of confidentiality, particularly as this relates to other staff and company members.

All staff may be asked to undertake other tasks to further the work of Mind the Gap as may be reasonably requested by senior managers and the Board of Trustees.
