Summary


The successful applicant will be responsible for the provision of Nuclear Medicine and Bone Densitometry Services at Newcastle Hospitals. This is a key leadership position within Radiology, responsible for the operation, management and strategic direction of the clinical services.

The department comprises of nearly 50 staff, including clinical scientists, clinical technologists, consultant radiologists, nurses and clerical staff. Gamma cameras, SPECT-CT scanners, DXA scanners and Radiopharmacies are installed at both of our two major hospitals in Newcastle; the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Freeman Hospital.

Around 16,000 diagnostic and therapy procedures are performed each year for the many specialties at this tertiary centre, including paediatrics, oncology, cardiology and neurology. The comprehensive therapy service includes highly specialist treatments such as Y-90 and Ho-166 Selective Internal Radiation Therapies.

The department is very active in research and provides scientific support to an external provider’s static PET-CT service, including supporting PET-CT accreditation for clinical trials, such as Zirconium-89 antibody imaging.

The team also plays a lead role in the teaching and assessment for the National School of Healthcare Science Scientific Training Programme associated MSc course in Medical Physics at Newcastle University, as one of only three accredited teaching centres in England.

Provide expert advice and strategic leadership for the nuclear medicine and bone densitometry services at Newcastle Hospitals.

Lead the development of the service with a focus on innovation, clinical governance and patient safety.

Provide professional leadership, mentor support and training. Management of the scientific and technologist teams.

Responsible for overseeing the provision of PET CT services by an external provider.

Support a culture of research and development within the department and for clinical trials.

Engage with other stakeholders within the North East and Cumbria to collaborate on issues of mutual interest such as funding and training of staff.

Contribute with an expert specialism perspective to Regional networks, e.g. the Northern Radiotherapy Network, Cumbria and North East Imaging Group.
