Overview:
Elmbridge Borough Council is seeking a dedicated and motivated Planning Officer to join our Development Management team. This position offers a fantastic opportunity to cover a short-term maternity leave and gain valuable experience in a dynamic local government setting. The successful candidate will assess planning applications in line with the National Planning Policy Framework and the Council’s adopted planning policies.
Key Responsibilities:
Manage a caseload of planning applications.
Draft recommendation reports for planning managers and Planning Committees.
Provide advice to the public, architects, developers, and stakeholders via telephone, email, or in person.
Assist senior officers with major development applications and projects.
Prepare and present the Council’s case at appeals, particularly those dealt with by written representations and informal hearings.
Stay updated with Planning Law and associated legislation.
Maintain the efficient running of the service.
Ideal Candidate:
Qualifications: Relevant A Levels, degree, or equivalent qualifications meeting RTPI accredited course entry requirements (Desirable).
Experience: Experience in the development management process and related planning issues (Desirable).
Skills:
Excellent communication skills (Essential).
Ability to work under pressure and contribute to team effectiveness (Essential).
Ability to prioritize and manage workload to meet deadlines (Essential).
Experience with computerized systems (Essential).
Ability to assess plans and drawings (Desirable).
Knowledge of planning policy and legislation (Desirable).
Special Requirements:
Commitment to undertake study leading to full Membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute (Essential).
Full driver’s license and access to a vehicle for visits throughout the Borough (Essential).
