Summary
The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust (RNOH) has an exciting opportunity to expand within the Spinal Unit, and appoint substantively. The Spinal Unit has consultants recognised both nationally and internationally for their expertise and experience leading the Spinal Unit at the RNOH. The Spinal Deformity service performs more deformity operations than any other hospital in the UK and receives referrals from tertiary spinal centres across the country for complex problems. The RNOH has been at the forefront of managing paediatric deformity, establishing the rib vertebral angle measurements and plaster jacket management and vertebral body tethering and growth modulation trial, all of which have a worldwide impact on the management of scoliosis. The Myeloma service has published extensively on the management of spinal Myeloma, pioneering non-surgical management with national and international impact. This service is a Consultant led service receiving acute and non-acute referrals, with a large proportion coming from other NHS Trusts. The successful applicant will take a full part in dealing with the caseload of the spinal surgical.
• Will be expected to maintain the highest clinical standards in the practice of the spinal team, and will undertake any reasonable clinical responsibility, which relates to the spinal team.
• Will be expected to be actively involved in the management of the department including attendance at the Business Unit, MDT and monthly meetings. They will be expected to take an active and engaged role in departmental and academic responsibilities as allocated by agreement across the department, including cover for colleagues’ annual leave and other authorised absences as appropriate
• The successful applicant will engage fully and proactively in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit.
• The postholder will be expected to engage in continuing professional development.
• A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee and their Clinical Director on behalf of the Chief Medical Officer prior to the commencement date of the appointment.
• The job plan shall be reviewed annually. It will cover all aspects of a consultant’s professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities, including a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external.
• Include personal objectives, details of their link to wider service objectives and details of the support required by the consultant to fulfill the job plan and the objectives.
• The postholder will participate in the spinal on-call rota, currently a 1 in 8 frequency.

The Spinal Unit has [12] Consultant Surgeons. This job plan is a combination of set and flexible sessions in relation to SPA time, clinic and theatre sessions. This will depend on the availability of theatre sessions in the trust. As the Trust secures more capacity we will proceed to make the job plan fixed with regular commitments although a degree of flexibility is always
