We are looking for an enthusiastic colleague to join our dynamic service within Barts Health NHS Trust. This is a new post based at Newham University Hospital for a maximum of 10 PAs (programmed activities) for one year with an expectation that the role will be advertised as a substantive post at the end of this period. Newham University Hospital (NUH) is a district general hospital with a major undergraduate teaching role, serving one of the youngest and most ethnically diverse populations in the UK. The hospital serves a multicultural population of 355 000 with a high prevalence of diabetes (8.5%). There is a purpose- built diabetes centre located in East Ham with diabetes outpatient facilities co located with the community Type 2 Diabetes Specialist Nurse service provided by the East London Foundation Trust and onsite podiatry and X ray.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the award- winning Diabetes and Endocrinology team at a time of significant investment and service expansion. The post includes general medicine, endocrinology and diabetes management in the inpatient and outpatient setting. We are seeking someone with an interest in Diabetes, with the opportunity to be involved in traditional outpatient clinics in addition to our innovative GP cluster-based diabetes MDT initiative that has been operational across Newham since 2013.

The Endocrine outpatient service is supported by two specialist nurses who undertake pre-clinic investigations and dynamic testing and we therefore have facility to investigate and manage a wide variety of endocrine conditions. We also benefit from close working relationships with the tertiary endocrine centre at St Bartholomew’s Hospital.

NUH is in the development phase of a 5-day consultant led care model with increased Specialty on site presence at weekends for review and advice. This appointment will be a step towards establishing 5-day consultant led care, allowing the team to evolve a “consultant of the week” General Internal Medicine (GIM) model. There would be an expectation that the successful applicant would contribute to the general medical on call

rota admitting patients over a 24 hour period starting at 0900am on a 1:18 frequency with prospective cover. The on call commitment to the site includes overnight availability for telephone advice from home. Monday – Friday admitted patients are reviewed through the day by the Acute Admission Unit consultant, who retains responsibility for all patients admitted to the acute admission wards. Therefore Monday – Friday a limited post take ward round only is required to see any patients remaining in the emergency department from the night take. At the weekend the on call consultant is required to review all patients admitted through the day and at the end of the night take.

The diabetes and endocrine team has a 26 bedded ward base and manages admissions where the primary complaint is speciality specific to Diabetes / Endocrinology in addition to general medicine. In-patients with diabetes are supported by a Diabetes Nurse Consultant and a full time Diabetes Inpatient Specialist Nurse.

We are a friendly and supportive diabetes and endocrine team comprising with this post 8 consultants in diabetes/endocrinology based at NUH, supported by three associate specialists, three specialist registrars, one IMT3 trainee, two IMT1s, one GPVTS trainee and three FY1 doctors. There is a weekly endocrine cases meeting, a monthly type 1 diabetes MDT meeting and a weekly X ray meeting. There is also a monthly department governance meeting and a monthly consultant meeting. We have close links with primary care including a regular diabetes partnership meeting chaired by the primary care diabetes lead.

Consultant office space and Secretarial/patient pathway coordinator support is based at NUH, and at the diabetes outreach unit at The Shrewsbury Road Health Centre, East Ham. Access to office space and IT is available.
