Job summary

The overall purpose of the Targeted Lung Health Check (TLHC) Programme is to enable the early detection of lung cancer in order to save lives. Coventry & Warwickshire Health & Care Partnership and the West Midlands Cancer Alliance has identified high disease and smoking prevalence areas within Coventry where a significant impact can be made from detecting early-stage lung cancer.

The post holder will be expected to be flexible, responsive, and provide specialist knowledge to the patient (and their carers where applicable). Attention to detail is of paramount importance and excellent organisation skills.

They will support community and secondary care colleagues in the effective management of patients with clinical responsibility for a defined patient group. The post holder will be able to make informed decisions within their own area and scope of professional practice to ensure agreed standards, objectives and targets are met. It is expected that the post holder will work flexibly to meet the needs of the service and will advise patients on the results of their LDCT scan

Main duties of the job

Clinical Duties / Responsibilities

1. Reviewing and analysing of scan results and following up appropriate action i.e., advising patients of results, onward referral, advising GP of results

2. Provide specialist nursing advice.

3. Undertake comprehensive health and risk assessments.

4. Assess patients' suitability to proceed to a diagnostic test, explain and take consent for the diagnostic test, and submit the diagnostic test referral form.

5. Participating in the writing of protocols, guidelines, patient information and documentation required for service review and development.

6. Possess a working knowledge of spirometry and procedures. ARTP Training to be provided. Working alongside UHCW respiratory diagnostic team to develop / maintain competency.

7. Supporting the clinical nurse manager in identifying and assessing complex clinical and non-clinical issues, implementing resolutions and monitoring/auditing outcomes.

8. A supportive resource for staff, advising on national, local and Trust policy and procedures/guidelines, ensuring that clinical governance is embedded in practice.

9. Support patients, carers and staff during difficult situations arising in the clinical area, e.g., breaking bad news or following an unexpected event.

10. Supporting the team with community events to improve uptake and heath inequalities.

  8. To undertake and promote practice sensitive to the needs of patients and families from multicultural backgrounds.
