Job summary
This advert is for a Registrar level position (ST3-ST6 equivalent) for a 6 month appointment from February 25
The clinical service is run by a well organised, multi-disciplinary team, including 4 full time consultant orthopaedic surgeons, 3 specialist nurses, 2 senior extended scope physiotherapists, 2 orthotists, a research officer and admin staff. It is well supported by junior medical staff and a Foot and Ankle fellow. The unit has pioneered a fully digitalised IT data collection system, which allows both audit and clinical research to be undertaken
Weekly time table consists of outpatient clinics, operating list, research, MDT meetings, and ward rounds.
There is the opportunity to be involved in research (it is strongly encouraged and supported to publish a paper), audit and there is a large emphasis on education.
The RNOH is a tertiary referral centre and the case mix includes complex tertiary work with complex cases being referred from across the country. There is an opportunity to work with all 4 consultants in theatre to gain exposure to a wide variety of cases.
Main duties of the job
The job involves working with the Foot & Ankle Unit. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct out-patient clinics, support in theatre, attend MDT meetings and conduct ward rounds. There is a big emphasis on working well as part of a team.
As the case mix is complex, prior experience in foot and ankle surgery at SpR level is required.
Ideally the candidate should have an interest in foot and ankle surgery, and experience of research and MDT working.
Also required are evidence of good written and verbal communication skills, an understanding of the major risk factors for foot and ankle surgery at a population level and at the level of the individual, ability and enthusiasm to teach medical undergraduates and Allied Health Professionals.
The applicant should have clarity of career aims, in particular reasons for choosing post in foot and ankle surgery, evidence of being a good team member, leadership qualities, commitment and interest in research, and have recognition of the importance of research in the field.
