Job summary

University Hospitals Birmingham Foundation Trust (UHB) is recruiting two Consultant Oncologists (one clinical Oncologist and one Medical Oncologist) to join their dynamic team. The successful post holders will join an innovative team of Consultant Oncologists, to deliver an Oncology service in one of the largest Trusts in the UK.

The successful appointees will cover Lymphoma, Urology, Hepbil and Lung tumour sites, offering specialist expertise and care to patients from across the West Midlands region. The successful candidates can expect to work within an innovative and supportive team, compromising of Consultant Oncologists, SPRs, Physician Associates, Speciality Doctors, Junior Doctors, CNS, Nurses, Advanced Clinical Practitioners and Pharmacists, whilst being supported by dedicated administrative teams.

UHB's Oncology service delivers an extensive range of systemic anti-cancer treatments and radiotherapy treatments. Consultant-led clinics are delivered face to face and virtually, from dedicated Oncology/Haematology units at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), Birmingham Heartlands Hospital (BHH), Good Hope Hospital (GHH) and Solihull Hospital (SHH). Bespoke Day Unit facilities support the delivery of chemotherapy, immunotherapy and supportive treatments from each hospital site.

Inpatient Oncology care is delivered at all of UHB's sites, supported by the Acute Oncology Team (AOS) and Cancer of Unknown Primary (CUP) service.

Main duties of the job

QEHB has two dedicated Oncology wards for elective inpatient treatment and emergency admissions. There is also an inpatient and day case Young Persons Unit (YPU).

Broad experience and understanding of Oncology

Specialist tumour site experience (In Lymphoma, Urology, Hepbil and Lung)

Significant experience in delivering chemotherapy and managing side effects

Demonstrates good interpersonal skills with patients, relatives and member of the clinical team

Ability to gain confidence and trust

Ability to cope with pressure

Ability to respond to change

Conscientious and hardworking

Positive contribution to MDTs

Flexibility in working pattern

Ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal) with patients and their families

Clinical

The appointee should be experienced in the management of patients with Oncological tumours and malignancies, (With a specific interest in In Lymphoma, Urology, Hepbil and Lung). The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop disease specific areas of interest, working alongside the current Oncology team. In keeping with the department's ambition as a teaching hospital, the appointee will have the opportunity to engage in research and would be encouraged to utilise world class expertise based on Campus within the University of Birmingham (UoB), the Cancer Research Clinical Trials Unit and the Institute for Translational Medicine to progress the research strategy under the umbrella of Birmingham Health Partners.

Inpatients

The appointees will participate in the attending and on-call rota for in-patient management of Oncology patients (1 in 14) based at QEH site.

Outpatients

The appointees will be expected to provide outpatient care through a set number of clinics per week. They will also contribute to speciality MDTs and participate in monthly mortality and morbidity meetings, quality meetings and educational sessions.
