Research at NNUH is conducted primarily at the NIHR Norfolk Clinical Research Facility (CRF), located at the main hospital as well as the Quadram Institute on the Norwich Research Park. The Norfolk CRF is one of 28 NIHR- partly funded clinical research facilities networked across the UK, which gives superb access to sites, expertise and research infrastructure.

Team NNUH's Research and Development department have an opportunity for a Clinical Research Nurse within the Commercial and Strategic research team.

We have a shared goal within our team; to undertake clinical research to improve treatment and care of patients here at NNUH and beyond. The ideal candidate will be dedicated to this goal and will recognise its significance; as well as the importance of our Trust's PRIDE values. Research is highly regulated locally, nationally and internationally; therefore, you should have some understanding of the research process such as trial protocols and policies, as well as an awareness of research governance issues.

The post of Clinical Research Nurse is perfect for an organised individual who is happy to work both independently and as part of a wider team.

Part time: 22.5 hours per week

Main duties of the job

As a Clinical Research Nurse, you will be responsible for assessing and managing the care pathways for patients and/or carer's participating in clinical trials. You will be people focused in your approach; recruiting, educating and monitoring those in the trial, and will collect and document your findings accurately.

You will have excellent communication skills with a positive and flexible approach to the workload. You should be a qualified Registered Nurse, have some band 5 experience, experience of working in a hospital setting, or working towards a health/research qualification (or have demonstrable equivalent experience.)

Clinical Research is a highly regulated field, the role involves using an in-depth knowledge of trial protocols and their application in practice, alongside a working knowledge and compliance with the regulations. You should therefore have a good understanding of research procedures, documentation and policies, as well as an awareness of local, national and international research governance issues.

  • To manage, with the assistance and support of senior colleagues, a range of clinical trial protocols.
  • To identify, screen and recruit participants into research studies according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria to ensure the effective achievement of study aims and monitoring of their condition throughout participation.
  • To register/randomise participants into trials.
  • To identify barriers to recruitment and to raise awareness of these, reporting to the Senior Research Nurse/Lead Research Nurse. To support action plans as required.
  • To act as the primary contact for the clinical trial participant in own caseload. Working with senior colleagues in obtaining informed consent as delegated by the Principal Investigator and in providing ongoing follow up care whilst the participant is in the clinical trial.
  • To provide ongoing advice and information to participants with regard to their participation in clinical research, in order to facilitate continued informed consent.
  • To act in the best interest of the research participants to ensure that their rights are upheld.
