An exciting 12 month secondment (to cover maternity leave) has arisen to offer a Band 6 Diabetes Specialist Nursing role specialising in Type 3C (pancreatic) diabetes, Islet and Pancreas transplantation. This is a unique opportunity for personal and professional development enhancing the knowledge and clinical skills in both the Trust and community in this new field of diabetes.
The successful candidate will be part of a highly skilled team who are extremely passionate in this area. The role entails supporting patients living with complex diabetes which include;
- Type 3C diabetes
- Pancreatic cancer
- Total pancreatectomy
- Other pancreatectomies
- Total pancreatectomy and Islet Auto Transplantation (TPIAT)
- Pancreatitis
- Other causes of type 3C diabetes
- Allogenic islet transplantation

Main duties of the job
- Working within the transplant team to assess these patients prior to being listed for transplant.
- Supporting them through the transplant process and post-transplant insulin titration
- Providing education
- Pancreas transplantation
- Working with in the multi-disciplinary teams including; surgeons and nephrologists
- Supporting them through transplant process and post-transplant where needed
- Attending outreach clinics
This role involves a lot of education within the team and outer areas. Providing education to patients on a daily basis.
Working within a multitude of MDTs across all 3 main sites in Newcastle upon Tyne Hospital Trusts. The candidate will work closely with a number of consultants within the diabetes and transplant service who also provide great support.
The candidate needs to able to manage their own caseload, deliver training and work within a group setting. They must be flexible, have great time management skills and be confident within their role.
