Job summary

We are looking to recruit Band 6 Occupational Therapists as part of our Mental Health Occupational Therapy Rotational programme. We are open to applications from current Band 5 Occupational Therapists wanting to develop into a Band 6 role. We are seeking a practitioner with good communication and liaison skills, enthusiastic and forward-thinking regarding innovative ways of working.

Our Band 6 Rotational Programme includes gaining experience in areas:

  • Home Treatment Team - Maidstone
  • Community Mental Health Services Older People - Tunbridge Wells
  • Community Mental Health Services - Maidstone
  • Primary Care Mental Health - Tonbridge / Tunbridge Wells

Each rotation lasts for 9 months

This post would suit you if you have had previous experience working in mental health or have an interest in working in mental health. You will have the opportunity to consolidate your knowledge of occupational therapy and be involved in delivering high-quality, evidence-based, outcome-measured occupational therapy interventions. This post also allows you to develop skills in/as lead health care professional, assessment skills for mental health needs with an occupational therapy focus.

The rotation will provide an opportunity to explore and gain an understanding of different areas of mental health practice, develop a broad range of clinical skills and ways of working. As well as developing relationships with the multidisciplinary teams and further understanding of different roles and teams.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide high quality and evidence based occupational therapy assessments and interventions, both group and individual, to people who access services and their carers/supporters/family members, in line with the occupational therapy pathways.
  • To communicate effectively with people who access services, carers the multi-disciplinary team and when appropriate outside agencies.
  • To contribute to the generic functioning of the team
  • To provide supervision and mentoring to more junior occupational therapists, occupational therapy apprenticeships, and support workers.
  • To provide occupational therapy student placements
  • To contribute to service development and audits
  • To take on the role of lead professional as appropriate

The occupational therapy leadership team is committed to an extensive, co-ordinated CPD program including a robust supervision structure, action learning sets, communities of practice, and core competence training and an annual conference. Staff are valued for their expertise in occupationally focused interventions and specialist group therapy. Opportunities to undertake further development such as enhance practitioner apprenticeships, and other leadership programs and apprenticeships.

JOB PURPOSE:

  • The senior occupational therapist is an experienced occupational therapist within the multi disciplinary care team.
  • To identify, develop and provide the Occupational Therapy contribution within the multi-disciplinary service in accordance with the needs of service users and the requirements of the service.
  • To assess, plan, deliver and evaluate therapeutic interventions for identified service users.
  • To manage a defined caseload of service users with occupational needs using evidence based, service user centred, hope and recovery, health promotion and relapse prevention orientated principles and practice.
  • To provide supervision to designated junior staff and students.

  • To ensure assessment of service users and analyse and interpret information gained to form an accurate formulation of function, strengths, capabilities and occupational needs.
  • To work collaboratively with service users, staff, and carers to identify goals to determine and deliver an appropriate intervention/recovery plan which maximises occupational engagement and performance whilst balancing risk, and promoting choice and independence.
  • To monitor, evaluate and modify therapeutic interventions in order to measure progress and increase efficacy for the best possible service user outcomes and experience.
  • To act as an experienced clinician supporting best practice in line with NICE guidance and professional standards
  • To demonstrate clinical leadership skills through the management of dedicated projects and approved quality improvement initiative.
