Associate Dean – NHSE Global Health Fellowship Programme

NHS England

Job summary

The East of England Deanery hosts a number of active programs which enable Doctors in Training to participate in the Global Health arena. The NHSE Global Health Fellowship Programme (NHSE GHVP) is a long standing, NHSE funded, time out of programme for early career doctors in training (DiTs) in the UK. It traditionally recruited GP Trainees, but more recently has been attracting trainees from secondary care, especially ACCS, EM, CMT, Paediatrics and Anaesthetics. Trainees on this program typically spend 6-9 months in one of a number of locations; including remote rural hospitals in Southern and Eastern Africa, India and elsewhere. Further information on the program can be foundhere.Formal and independent evaluation of the programme has recently been undertaken demonstrating its effectiveness, and with a number of suggestions for improving and expanding the programme and which is available on request.

The GHVP AD role has become vacant as a result of the imminent retirement of the current AD. The post is fully funded at 6 PAs/Sessions by NHSE and is hosted by the EoE Deanery. We work closely withthe National Directorate of Global Health Partnerships. The GHVP AD does not need to be physically based in the EoE, but does need to be resident in England.

Main duties of the job

It is preferable, but not mandatory that the AD has a clinical contract with an NHS Trust or is actively working in GP. It is essential that the AD has an excellent track record of educational delivery, and especially educational supervision, of doctors in training in the UK and relevant experience of healthcare in resource poor global locations.

It is anticipated that the successful applicant will work primarily with the UK administrative and clinical staff remotely, and similarly with staff in host countries and hospitals. However, it is also expected that as required the successful applicant would travel to the local (EoE) offices to meet with the teams involved in the delivery of the program in the East of England. There are likely to be some opportunities for international travel to support establishment of strategic institutional relationships that underpin the programme.

We are currently working with NHSE to review governance ad oversight of NHSE managed overseas programs, including this one. The GHVP AD will be pivotal to ensuring the running of the program and the management and support to DiTs on the program is in line with national guidance as it develops. The GHVP AD is likely to be involved in developing/evaluating such guidance.

Line management and support for the appointee(s) will be provided by a deputy postgraduate dean from East of England, and the appointee will integrate with, and share developmental opportunities with other APDs working in the deanery.
