Job summary

Working for Time for Teeth at HMP Gartree you will be based within a prison setting providing a full range of NHS care and treatment to patients.You will be working as part of an integrated health team where you will have the opportunity to make a real difference supporting patients with vulnerable and complex health needs from a whole range of different backgrounds.The prison environment is a rewarding and challenging one which will allow you to develop and enhance your skills if you are looking to boost your dental career and knowledge whilst providing great patient care, then this may well be the position for you. You will have no UDA targets or lab bill fees to meet.

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based registered dental care in the relevant clinic(s) in a secure setting.

You will ensure clinical care is delivered in-line with the NHS Personal Dental Services contract and local service specifications and key performance indicators, and in-accordance with relevant national quality standards.

You will practice in-line with organisational and local clinical governance processes, working collaboratively with the wider local prison / secure healthcare teams (to include healthcare managers, GPs, and secondary care), to support effective management of acute dental conditions, continuing care, and external referrals.

You will maintain up to date clinical knowledge, in-line with Enhanced CPD and relevant national standards, and the requirements of the organisation and job role.

You will practice in accordance with BDA Standards of service and conduct, FGDP(UK) Standards in Dentistry and Time for Teeth organisational standards of conduct and performance, and Time for Teeth policies and procedures.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Provide a high standard dental care through direct clinical caseload.

Work effectively and collaboratively with wider healthcare colleagues.

Specifically, respond to support and direction provided by the clinical supervisor.

Work effectively with internal colleagues, to support the delivery of effective clinical care in-line with clinical governance processes.

Contribute to the periodic review and analysis of service performance.

Escalate performance concerns and clinical risks, ensuring reporting in accordance with relevant requirements.

Assist in incidents and complaints handling.

Carry out any other duties within the general scope of the post as directed by the Clinical Director.

Clinical Leadership:

Contribute to the identification clinic service improvement needs.

Engage positively in reflective practice through clinical supervision.

Maintain constructive, collaborative working relationships with organisational, dental, and wider healthcare colleagues, to support the effective delivery of care.

Specifically, work closely with colleagues as a member of the local dental care team.

Clinical Duties:

To be responsible for the overall delivery of patient care, for a defined clinical caseload.

Provide advice and treatments in accordance with evidence-informed practice and relevant practice guidelines, e.g. Time for Teeth guidance, NICE, GDC, FGDP, BSP and SCDEP.

Provide key messages relating to oral health promotion

Treat patients in line with local policies and procedures.

Ensure compliance with HTM 01-05 / approved infection control procedures.

Provide appropriate clinic-based day-to-day supervision to dental care professionals (DCP).

Use all equipment and machinery in accordance with manufacturers' recommendations and ensure that they are maintained regularly and in good working order, in accordance with relevant maintenance schedules.

Ensure the welfare of all patients, including vulnerable patients and in-line with Safeguarding procedures.

Comply with all health and safety rules and guidance, including PPE, COSHH, HTM/WHTM-and appropriate waste disposal etc.

General and Administrative Duties:

Accurately complete patient clinical records in-line with FGDP and Time for Teeth policy.

Liaise with prison/secure healthcare and admin providers to ensure integrated patient care.

Engage in all aspects of clinical governance at a personal and organisational level.

Comply with the CQC/HIW regulations.

Complete daily tool count, and other security checks in -line with procedure.

Perform routine clerical duties, e.g. appointment book management, and work proactively to ensure effective waiting list management.

Check and complete daily tasks on SystmOne (clinical records system).

Manage secondary care referrals, in accordance with local referral guidelines.

Take steps to reduce DNAs and other reasons for failed appointments, including completing template letters for patients where appropriate.

Manage patient complaints, in accordance with approved procedure.

Report, file and log incidents in accordance with approved procedure.

Undergo training as required, to develop skills and abilities (e.g. in-line with Enhanced CPD requirements).

Assist with staff induction.
